Comparing Retinol Serums
glo-therapuetics has some amazing serums. Listed below is a comparison of three of them:
TRETINOL 0.5%
Description” Anhydrous retinol and antioxidant serum. Smoothes the skin and reduces wrinkles as well as aiding the reduction of hyperpigmentation. Skin will look more luminous. It will be best appreciated by clients whose skin is normal to dry. This is a strong product and sloughing is not unusual even after using it once or twice. It will serve well to use it as a prep for an exfoliating treatment or to rejuvenate sluggish skin.
Directions: Apply in the evening on clean skin. Start off using twice a week and increase as tolerated. For skin that cannot tolerate it more than twice a week or even less, it can still beneficial when used occasionally.
Ingredients: All-Trans-Retinol is the main ingredient. It very efficiently converts to retinoic acid in the skin so more of it is absorbed. Since it is in an anhydrous base, it remains very stable. Both the All-Trans-Retinol and the anhydrous delivery system are patented. There are also Vitamins C and E, which offer brightening and antioxidant properties.
Feeling: The feel of this unique product is what will probably be the biggest selling point. It really needs to be experienced to completely understand its appeal. It applies like velvet and the skin responds almost immediately by feeling and looking smoother. As a result, there is less of a tendency to cover with a moisturizer, giving the product the ability to penetrate and do its work uninhibited by other products.
Recommenced For: All but oily skin and sensitive skin. This product can be beneficial for oily/acneic skin but because of the feel, it will probably not be popular with these sin types. This product is ideal to use as a pretreatment, particularly for skin types that are more peel resistant. Not recommended for layering with peels.
RETIONAL CS
Description: A water-based gel serum at a pH of 2.3. The low pH is from the Glycolic Acid and aids in the absorption. Retinol penetrates into the cells and regulates their activity - it can be beneficial for any type of skin concern including acne and aged skin. Retinol converts to Retionic Acid and while 3% is a strong dose, some of it is lost in the conversion.
Directions: Apply in the evening, allowing it to penetrate for 30 minutes before applying moisturizer. This is usually well-tolerated but can create initial sloughing and mild irritation. Start off using it a couple times a week and up to 7x weekly if needed.
Ingredients 3% Retinol and 4% Glycolic Acid. These two work synergistically. Since they penetrate in different ways, exfoliation is more thorough. Glycolic Acid is beneficial for most skin types with the exception of sensitive skin. There are also brighteners, antioxidants and anti-inflammatories in this product which will penetrate better because of the Retinol and Glycolic.
Feeling: It is gold colored, gel-like consistency. Because of its light feel, acneic and oily skin clients are comfortable using it. It does not add any moisture to the skin, so for those desiring it, a moisturizer should be applied 30 minutes afterwards.
Recommended For: Oily, acne-prone, mature skin and to prepare skin for an exfoliation.
RENEW SERUM
Description: A water-based gel serum with pH of 2.48. It can be used by mature skin, but is most appreciated by oily and acneic skin because of its antibacterial, antimicrobial and oil-control properties. It stimulates mild exfoliation and cell renewal to improve texture and tone.
Directions: Use in the evening on clean skin. Allow to penetrate for 30 minutes, if needed follow with a moisturizer. Can be used 2-7 time per week as tolerated and needed.
Ingredients: 1% Retinol, 7% Glycolic and 1& Salicylic. The Salicylic Acid is a well-know ingredient beneficial for treating acne-prone skin because of its ability to penetrate into the follicle. It exfoliates and kills the p.acnes bacteria. Also included is Totarol, which is antibacterial, antioxidant and antimicrobial.
Feeling: A non-oily, yellow/gold, gel.
Recommended For: Combination, acne-prone, oily and mature skin. This can also be beneficial for clients suffering from in-grown hair and keratosis pilaris. Aestheticians can use Renew Serum with steam to aid with extraction during facial treatments. Can also be used as a home prep for professional exfoliation treatments.
