Eyebrows

A week or so ago I posted a picture of Anne Hathaway on Facebook with and without eyebrows.   I stated that if you knew me well, you’d know how important I think eyebrows are, and that picture was an excellent example.

If eyes are the window to the soul, brows are the frame.  They are highly underrated, but very significant aspect of our appearance.  Though not much thought is given to eyebrows unless they are  horribly unruly or missing, they play in important role in communicating non-verbally to those around you.  Movement of the brow can easily express your mood, be it somber or surprised.  (I’m sure you’ve seen the drawn-on brow that is in a permanent “surprise” position.)
I have heard from a number of women who are going through chemotherapy that loosing their eyebrows was more traumatic than loosing their hair.

Shaping and primping of brows goes back before the time of Cleopatra.  We continue to tweeze, wax, draw, paint, tattoo, and stencil in our brows to achieve a flattering shape.  We are all familiar with the “Andy Rooney” like bushy eyebrows of old men and make sure we rid ourselves of the dreaded uni-brow.

Aside from the expression and framing aspects of the brow, little is know about why we might have them.  There is supposition that they are to protect the eye from sweat and rain that might might have run down our ancestors’ foreheads.  This might have given early humans an advantage when running from prey.  But maybe, like the snarl of a lion, a raised brow could have scared an animal away.  (I’ve seen some pretty scary eyebrows in my day.)

But with the lack of attention that is thought to be given to eyebrows, I must ask the following questions:  What is one of the first things they did to Susan Bole when she gained fame for her singing prowess?  They tweezed and shaped her eyebrows.  What makes a pair of glasses look like Groucho Marx?  A mustache and dark eyebrows.  What does David Banner gain when he morphs into the Incredible Hulk, other than green skin and huge muscles?  Huge black eyebrows.

With the advent of plastic surgery and medications to soften the signs of aging, we are also seeing more individuals with lack of expression. Botox, which paralysis the muscles can almost make faces look plastic due to lack of movement.

I challenge you to really look at your eyebrows the next time you pass a mirror.  Raise them up and down, scrunch them together, notice what a different it makes and imagine how you would look without them.

At Santé we sell a number of different items to help improve, enhance, or mimic eyebrows.  If you’d like to learn more, please call us today.
